U.S. Scott 901, the 3 cent National Defense Issue picturing the torch of enlightment paying the 3 cent surface letter first-class rate. The cover was carried on the Snow Cruiser when it explored the polar region and returned to the U.S. aboard the U.S.S. North Star where it was post marked at the port of entry in Boston, Massachusetts on May 16, 1941. The cover has an attractive cachet picturing the Snow Cruiser and a backstamp stating that the "Registered No. 0170" cover was "Carried from Little America by U.S.S. North Star". There is also a copy of a type letter inside telling about the Snow Cruiser, the Byrd expedition, and the circumstances related to World war II that caused an 18 month delay in its delivery back to the U.S.
